The Lubricity Smoothing System (Q-Restore Smoothing Masque) FAQs

What is The Lubricity Smoothing System?

The Lubricity Smoothing System is the next generation of The Lubricity System.  It is comprised of Q-Restore Smoothing Masque, a weekly hair masque, Q-Shampoo and Q-Condition.  Developed by Dr. Boyce Clark, The Lubricity Smoothing System is designed to be an easier, more user-friendly way to rid your hair of frizz and repair damage caused by high heat, aggressive coloring and mechanical (ponytails, hats) damage. Q-Restore Smoothing Masque is used once or twice a week in place of Q-Condition.

How is The Lubricity Smoothing System different from The Lubricity System 2-Step Treatment?

The Lubricity Smoothing System is the next generation of The Lubricity System.  Q-Restore Smoothing Masque is the main component of The Lubricity Smoothing System.  Q-Restore Smoothing Masque is applied in the shower in place of conditioner, which is an easy application and takes less time than the 2-Step Treatment. It also minimizes application errors or issues by eliminating the two step process.  After 1-4 washes, The Lubricity Smoothing System yields the same results as The Lubricity System 2-Step Treatment.

If you have sensitive skin, use acne medications or anti-aging facial cleansers, especially those that contain retinoids, retinol, Vitamin A or Alpha Hydroxy Acids, we suggest that you use The Lubricity Smoothing Set instead of The Lubricity System 2-Step Treatment.  Also, if you're looking for an easier, more user-friendly way to get frizz-free results, we recommend The Lubricity Smoothing Set.

Do I have to use The Lubricity Smoothing System exactly as directed?

Yes, but unlike The Lubricity System 2-Step Treatment (which is a one time application every 3-6 months), you can wash your hair 1-4 times to see maximum results again with The Lubricity Smoothing System.   The Lubricity Smoothing System consists of Q-Shampoo, Q-Condition and Q-Restore Smoothing Masque.  Use Q-Shampoo every time you wash. Use Q-Restore Smoothing Masque once or twice a week in place of conditioner.  Make sure to leave Q-Restore Smoothing Masque on for at least 5-10 minutes.  If you wash more than once or twice a week, use Q-Condition as conditioner.

How do I use Q-Restore Smoothing Masque?

Wash your hair with Q-Shampoo and use Q-Restore Smoothing Masque in place of conditioner.  Q-Restore Smoothing Masque is designed to be used once or twice a week, depending on your hair's frizz, coarseness and porosity. If you have minimal frizz, you will only need to use Q-Restore Smoothing Masque once a week.  If you have more frizz, you will use Q-Restore Smoothing Masque twice a week.  If you wash your hair more than twice a week, you should use Q-Condition to continue the effects of your last wash with Q-Restore Smoothing Masque.

I did not see immediate results from Q-Restore Smoothing Masque.  Am I doing something wrong?

While you should notice an immediate difference in your hair the first time you use Q-Restore Smoothing Masque, maximum results will not be achieved until 1-4 uses of Q-Restore Smoothing Masque, which may take 2-3 weeks, depending on whether you use it once or twice a week.

If you do not notice an immediate difference in your hair, it's likely that you did not apply enough Q-Restore Smoothing Masque to your hair.   When washing your hair with Q-Restore Smoothing Masque, use a generous amount and be sure to completely cover your hair from root to tip.  Comb through in the shower with a wide-tooth comb to ensure equal distribution.   Wait 5-10 minutes and rinse thoroughly.

After rinsing and drying, you should feel increased softness immediately and notice increased shine after drying.  Frizz should be minimized but may not be completely gone.  Frizz should completely subside after 3-4 uses.

The Lubricity System 2-Step Treatment FAQs

Should I use The Lubricity System 2-Step Treatment or The Lubricity Smoothing System?

The Lubricity System 2-Step Treatment was created by Dr. Boyce Clark and is our original frizz-fighting formula. The Lubricity System 2-Step Treatment includes two steps, Step 1 Penetrate and Step 2 Encapsulate, which are both applied to your hair in a process.

In 2018, Dr. Clark and Lubricity Labs launched the next generation of The Lubricity System, known as The Lubricity Smoothing System.  The Lubricity Smoothing System is comprised of Q-Shampoo, Q-Condition and Q-Restore Smoothing Masque.  Q-Shampoo is used with every wash and  Q-Restore Smoothing Masque is used once or twice a week, depending on your level of frizz.  Q-Condition is used if you wash more than once or twice a week.

The Lubricity Smoothing System is easier to apply than the 2-Step Treatment and has less possibility of an application error or skin irritation, therefore, it is now favored by many of our long-term customers.

Who should NOT use The Lubricity System 2-Step Treatment?

The main active ingredient in The Lubricity System 2-Step Treatment is glycolic acid.

Step 1 Penetrate has a similar pH to that of lemon juice. For a small number of people, Step 1 Penetrate may cause a slight sensation, especially for those with plant-based allergies or sensitive scalp. This sensation should stop after rinsing your hair after the application of the 2-Step Treatment and any redness should clear up after the application. For users of dermatological anti-aging products or acne medications, please take special care to avoid the facial area while applying Step 1 Penetrate as use of this product may cause additional irritation and redness on the face. All users should take special care to keep Step 1 Penetrate off of sensitive skin, especially the face, hairline and neck.  If you have any specific questions about the ingredients in the 2-Step Treatment, please consult with your Dermatologist prior to use.

If you have any concerns about potential sensation or irritation with The Lubricity System 2-Step Treatment, we recommend using The Lubricity Smoothing Set, which consists of Q-Restore Smoothing Masque, Q-Shampoo and Q-Condition.

Do I have to use The Lubricity System 2-Step Treatment exactly as directed?

Yes. Deviations from the instructed use and improper application will cause diminished results. If you have any questions about introducing The Lubricity System 2-Step Treatment into your haircare routine, please contact us at customerlove@lubricitylabs.com.  We're happy to help!

Do I have to use gloves to apply The Lubricity System 2-Step Treatment?

It is not required to wear gloves during the 2-Step Treatment, however, if you have sensitive skin or open cuts on your hands, but be sure to wash hands thoroughly after applying each step. Step 1 Penetrate has a pH level similar to lemon juice so some temporary irritation may occur.

If you spill the treatment, immediately wipe up product with soap and water off any surfaces and blot away any excess product from face and neck, especially around the hairline. Do not let the treatment come in contact with skin, eyes, mouth or nose, or clothing. Rinse well with water if contact occurs.

Do I rinse out Step 1 Penetrate before applying Step 2 Encapsulate?

No, Step 2 Encapsulate is applied directly on top of Step 1 Penetrate.

Do I have to use the entire bottle of Step 1 Penetrate and Step 2 Encapsulate in a single use?

Each bottle of Step 1 Penetrate and Step 2 Encapsulate is intended to be used fully as a single use treatment.  Even if you feel your hair is fully saturated, continue applying Step 1 Penetrate as your hair will continue absorbing it during the 15 minute wait period. Proper use of the 2-Step Treatment is essential to achieving desired results.

I experienced a sensation (tingling, itching) or irritation when applying Step 1 Penetrate. Is this normal?

Step 1 Penetrate has a similar pH to that of lemon juice. For a small number of people, Step 1 Penetrate may cause a slight sensation, especially for those with plant-based allergies or sensitive scalp. This sensation should stop after rinsing your hair after the application of the 2-Step Treatment and any redness should clear up after the application.

For users of dermatological products, such as retinoids, retinol, Vitamin A,  Alpha Hydroxy Acids or acne medication, please take special care to avoid the face, hairline and neck area while applying Step 1 Penetrate as use of this product may cause irritation and redness on the face.

If you have any concerns about potential sensation or irritation with The Lubricity System 2-Step Treatment, we recommend using The Lubricity Smoothing Set, which consists of Q-Restore Smoothing Masque, Q-Shampoo and Q-Condition.

All users should take special care to keep Step 1 Penetrate off of sensitive skin, especially the face, hairline and neck.  If you have any specific questions about the ingredients in the 2-Step Treatment, please consult with your Dermatologist prior to use.

Should I expect to see instant results after using The Lubricity System 2-Step Treatment?

Proper use is key to success with The Lubricity System 2-Step Treatment. While many people do see immediate results from the 2-Step Treatment, others may not begin to see results until after several washes with Q-Shampoo and Q-Condition.  Be sure to review the instruction card included with the 2-Step Treatment and the instructions on the bottles of Q-Shampoo and Q-Condition prior to use.

During the application of the 2-Step Treatment, be sure to fully saturate each section of your hair from root to tip.  Even when you feel like you've applied enough of Step 1 Penetrate, continue applying until the entire contents of the bottle are gone.  It is helpful to have someone assist you to ensure that your hair is fully saturated as those with thick, long hair may sometimes inadvertently miss a spot or a section without knowing.

Remember, The Lubricity System is just that – a system. While many do receive immediate frizz relief from the 2-Step Treatment, some may take longer.  The 2-Step Treatment is designed to remove all previous buildup, reveal the natural state of your hair and also begin the process of eliminating frizz and repairing damage.  Buildup can be caused by a variety of factors, including previous chemical treatments and longterm use of lesser-quality haircare products. Q-Shampoo and Q-Condition are designed to continuously repair hair going forward and act as a "mini-treatment" each time you use it.

Keep in mind that The Lubricity System is designed to immediately combat frizz caused by humidity.  Frizz due to damage from chemical treatments, aggressive coloring and heat application will be repaired over time with continued proper use of The Lubricity System.  Just as the damage to your hair occurred over time, it will take time to repair the damage.

If you see no change in your hair at all after the 2-Step Treatment and subsequent washes with Q-Shampoo and Q-Condition, it's possible that there was an error in the application process. Please contact our Customer Love team for further guidance at customerlove@lubricitylabs.com.

Will The Lubricity System 2-Step Treatment immediately remove all of my frizz?

The Lubricity System 2-Step Treatment is designed to immediately combat frizz caused by humidity.  Frizz due to mechanical damage from chemical treatments, aggressive coloring and heat application will be diminished over time with continued proper use of The Lubricity System.  As the damage to your hair occurred over time, it will take time to repair that damage. Therefore, results may not be immediate but will be realized over time.

Do I need to shampoo and condition my hair immediately following the 2-Step Treatment?

No, you only need to rinse hair thoroughly with cold water immediately after the treatment.  If you do not notice immediate results from The 2-Step Treatment, we recommend that you wash with Q-Shampoo and Q-Condition and be sure to leave Q-Condition on for at least five minutes.

Is there a mandatory waiting period after the 2-Step Treatment for washing hair?

No, you can resume your normal routine using Q-Shampoo and Q-Condition. There is no mandatory waiting period. The same goes for pulling your hair back, wearing a hat, adding a barrette, etc.; whatever your hair routine may be, you can resume it without a waiting period.

Will The Lubricity System 2-Step Treatment cause my hair to lose its natural texture or color treatment?

No, unlike other treatments currently on the market, The Lubricity System 2-Step Treatment will smooth, rather than straighten, your hair’s natural texture. You are left with incredibly soft, shiny hair that is more manageable without frizzing or fuzzing, no matter your hair type.

The same is true for color treated hair. By using The Lubricity System 2-Step Treatment immediately after you color your hair, the treatment will lock down the cuticle, holding in the color pigment and extending the life of your color up to 40% longer. We suggest applying The Lubricity System 2-Step Treatment immediately after your next color appointment.

We do not recommend using the 2-Step Treatment immediately before coloring your hair as this may potentially diminish the results of The Lubricity System 2-Step Treatment.

Will the Step 1 Penetrate, Step 2 Encapsulate treatment damage my hair?

No, Lubricity Labs products use science, instead of heat, to lock in hair’s natural moisture and block out humidity, pollutants and other external factors that cause hair to frizz. No heat means no harmful side effects, nor damage to your hair. All Lubricity Labs ingredients are naturally derived, without harmful fumes, formaldehyde and other toxins commonly found in harsh straightening treatments.

While many do receive immediate frizz relief from the 2-Step Treatment, some may experience hair feeling dry.  This is not damage caused by the 2-Step Treatment but the revelation of the natural state of your hair once wax and buildup is removed.  Buildup can be caused by a variety of factors, including previous chemical treatments and longterm use of lesser-quality haircare products. Q-Shampoo and Q-Condition are designed to alleviate dryness and continuously condition hair going forward.  Keep in mind that The Lubricity System is just that - a system -  and the condition of your hair will continue to improve over time.

How long does The Lubricity System 2-Step Treatment last?

The Lubricity System 2-Step Treatment lasts for 3-6 months, depending on a few factors. If you color your hair, wash it daily and/or frequently heat style your locks, the treatment is more likely to last for three months. If you do not color your hair, use zero to moderate heat when styling your hair, and wash your hair only a couple of times a week, you will likely see longer results lasting up to six months. Regular use of the included Q-Shampoo and Q-Condition is essential to success and extending the life of the 2-Step Treatment.

If you color your hair every few weeks, use heat frequently or swim frequently, we suggest using The Lubricity Smoothing Set instead of The Lubricity System 2-Step Treatment.

What is the best way to style my hair, once I’ve completed The Lubricity System 2-Step Treatment?

Do not vigorously towel dry hair, as this will rough up your cuticle, hinder results and encourage frizz. Instead, gently blot hair with a towel to remove some of the moisture before styling. For best results, use an ionic hair dryer if you blow dry your hair, a professional grade flat iron if you straighten your hair, and a wide tooth comb (never fine tooth or horsehair) to brush through wet hair. Remember, heat is not needed to activate our system so feel free to allow your hair to air-dry.

If you use any styling products, such as hair spray or gel, consult with your stylist to ensure you are using the best products for your hair type. Many drugstore brands, and even some professional brands, contain harsh chemicals, which hinder the results and hurt overall hair health.

Q-Shampoo & Q-Condition FAQs

Why is it important to use Q-Shampoo and Q-Condition?

Whether you use Q-Restore Smoothing Masque or the 2-Step Treatment, Q-Shampoo and Q-Condition were designed to be used in conjunction with those products and they are integral parts of The Lubricity System.  Q-Shampoo and Q-Condition were developed to help you achieve and maintain your best results. Using other products, especially lesser-quality drugstore brands, will prevent or diminish your best results.

How often should I use Q-Shampoo and Q-Condition?

You should use Q-Shampoo and Q-Condition every time you wash in order to achieve and maintain your best results. You can use Q-Restore Smoothing Masque in place of Q-Condition once or twice a week for maximum frizz-free results.  While Q-Shampoo and Q-Condition are safe for daily use, we recommend washing hair no more than three times per week to allow your hair's natural oil (sebum) to regulate, which will lead to healthier hair overall.

Is there a specific way I should use Q-Shampoo and Q-Condition?

Be sure to review the instructions on the back of Q-Shampoo and Q-Condition prior to use.  Overall, Q-Shampoo and Q-Condition are straightforward and simple to use, like most shampoos and conditioners on the market. Shake the bottles well before using to mix all ingredients. Be sure to leave Q-Condition in for at least five minutes and comb it through hair with a wide tooth comb before rinsing out. It is key to thoroughly rinse Q-Shampoo out of hair before applying Q-Condition. You must also thoroughly rinse Q-Condition out of hair after use, as leaving in any excess solution can cause hair to feel heavy and weighted.

Will I see results if I use only Q-Shampoo and Q-Condition?

Yes, Q-Shampoo and Q-Condition help to lock in your hair’s natural moisture, keeping hair smooth and frizz free. For your most dramatic results, use Q-Shampoo and Q-Condition with Q-Restore Smoothing Masque.

Will using Q-Shampoo and Q-Condition help make my hair healthier?

Yes, studies have shown that the ingredients found in Q-Shampoo and Q-Condition strengthen hair up to 55% after five uses. Hair will be less prone to breakage, frizzing and tangling and will be softer, shinier and more manageable than ever.

How long do Lubricity Labs products last?

All Lubricity Labs products last up to 12 months from date of purchase, both opened and unopened.

What should I do if my Lubricity Labs package was exposed to extreme cold temperatures during shipping?

Lubricity Labs products are not affected by extreme cold weather, with the exception of the 2-Step Treatment.  Step 1 Penetrate of the 2-Step Treatment contains natural fruit acids that can potentially crystalize in cold weather below 32 degrees. Tiny crystals may appear in near the bottom of the bottle when held up to light. When crystals form, the product may not be as effective as the natural fruit acids are contained in the crystals and not spread throughout the bottle. If you believe your product has been exposed to temperatures below 32 degrees either in the shipping process or during the delivery process, you can allow Step 1 Penetrate to sit at room temperature for three days before use or you can place Step 1 Penetrate sit in a bowl of warm water for five minutes before use. If you have any questions, please contact our Customer Love Team at customerlove@lubricitylabs.com for more information.

Should Lubricity Labs products be stored at room temperature?

Yes, we strongly recommend storing all Lubricity Labs products at room temperature and away from excessive heat or cold.  Exposure to extreme temperatures may affect the quality of the products.  Please contact our Customer Love Team for more information at customerlove@lubricitylabs.com

Can I swim while using Lubricity Labs products?

If you regularly swim, we suggest using The Lubricity System Smoothing Set, which is comprised of Q-Restore Smoothing Masque, Q-Shampoo and Q-Condition.  Please contact our Customer Love Team at customerlove@lubricitylabs.com if you have any questions regarding swimming and use of Lubricity Labs products.
